Ingredients

  • 2 slices white sandwich bread, crusts removed, torn
  • 1 small onion
  • 300g beef mince
  • 300g pork mince
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ¼ tsp allspice
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 40g unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp plain flour
  • 500ml (2 cups) beef stock
  • 125ml (½ cup) thickened cream

Method

  1. Grate onion into a large bowl. Add torn bread and mix until the bread is soggy. Let soak for 1 minute.
  2. Add beef mince, pork mince, egg, nutmeg, allspice, pepper, and salt. Mix well.
  3. Roll heaped tablespoons of mixture into balls (makes 25–30).
  4. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown meatballs in two batches, about 3 minutes per batch. Set aside.
  5. Pour off excess oil and reduce heat to medium.
  6. Melt butter in the pan. Add flour and stir for 1 minute.
  7. Gradually pour in beef stock, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Bring to a simmer.
  8. Return meatballs to the pan with any resting juices. Simmer for 8–10 minutes until the gravy thickens.
  9. Stir in cream and simmer for 2 minutes.
  10. Serve over mashed potatoes.
